Church History

New Hope Baptist Church was organized in the home of Bishop and First Lady White in Fort Washington, Maryland on Saturday, October 24, 1981. The church started with 22 founding members.

On Sunday, November 15, 1981, the multi-purpose room of the John Bayne Elementary School became New Hope’s sanctuary, with the Trustee Ministry, Gospel Chorus and the Usher Board being the first established organizations on this day. Soon thereafter, the New Hope family established the following organizations: Trustee Board, the Deacon and Deaconess Board, Usher Board, Sunday School Department, Children’s Ensemble, W.I.T.T. Club (a group for young adults), and the Eveready Choir.

In November 1985, the Church purchased a housing property at the present location of 3400 Pinevale Avenue, Forestville, MD. The New Hope family joined together to tear down some of the walls and turn the home into our very first church edifice. Seven years later, in November 1993, after a lot of planning, prayers, permits, and patience, the New Hope Baptist Church structure was renovated into our present structure, with a steeple that can now be seen for miles around. During this period, in response to the Pastor’s vision, the Church acquired an adjoining property located at 3415 Pumphrey Drive, Forestville, Maryland. This property now serves as the New Hope Baptist Church Annex I. In January 2010, we purchased the second adjoining property at 3411 Pumphrey Drive, which now serves as our Annex 2.

At present, we can be proud of the growth that has been a part of our continuing efforts to serve and glorify God. In addition to the foregoing list of ministries, our church has been blessed with the Executive Committee, Executive Counsel, Minds and Hearts Brotherhood, D.O.V.E. Ministry, Daughter’s of Destiny, Sons of Promise, Praise and Worship team, 1st & 3rd Sunday Choir, Mime Ministry, Dance Ministry, Hospitality committee, Outreach Ministry, Marriage Ministry, Publicity committee, Children’s Church on 3rd Sundays, NHBC Bible Institute and Ministerial Staff that continues to grow. To God be the Glory! We are continually praying that the Lord will use each of us mightily.

We are very thankful for how the Lord continues to work through our Shepherd and Bishop, ordained Sunday, October 21, 2006, to become and present a more excellent New Hope that will bring God glory. We continue to move forward to fulfill the NHBC vision to expand the Kingdom and become an even more effective witness for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in the surrounding community.
